A Ministry of Presence

So now, little children, remain in Him, so that when He appears we may have boldness and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. - 1 John 2:28

One of the most important ways to minister in many traditional cultures is through presence.

For example, years ago my wife and I went to a friend's village and sat for four hours while various members of his large family came to greet us. What appeared (to me, at first) to be a waste of time was actually an excellent opportunity to show love and respect for new friends who were influential members of a significant unreached people group.

Did you know that you also have a "ministry of presence" with the Lord? John emphasizes the importance of this ministry in the 15th chapter of his Gospel. He calls it "abiding" or "remaining" and for many of us, it is as comfortable as sitting among strangers for four hours! We may even feel like we're "wasting time" as we meditate before God, but it is a vital element of our spiritual health.

Just remember that being with Christ is just as important (if not more) as working for Him.

Most conversations are simply monologues delivered in the presence of a witness. - Margaret Millar
