Based On His Promise

But based on His promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness will dwell. - 2 Peter 3:13

As a kid, if I wanted to impress someone with the sincerity of a promise, I might have said, "Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye." I also would have made an "X" on my chest as I spoke, otherwise it would not have counted.

Where do such things come from!? Why did a promise have to be accompanied by such a solemn oath? It seems to me that such oaths seem necessary, because kids (and grownups) don't keep their promises. Often, at the first sign of difficulty, many cave, fold, or run. A man's word is no longer his bond and most go looking for a way out of every contract they may have already signed.

At a time like this, isn't it good to know that God keeps His word? We should never doubt His sincerity for God gave the "apple" of His eye (His own unique Son) on a cross and there Jesus died for the lost He came to save. God did what He said He would do and if His promise is enough, shouldn't ours be as well?

When you read, consider that it is God's Word which you read; and that His faithfulness is pledged to fulfill both its promises and threatenings. - Adam Clarke
