But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that [day] the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed. - 2 Peter 3:10

"He never saw it coming."
In football, we might call it "getting blind-sided." I've been "blind-sided" before, but on more than one occasion it was largely my own fault. I was looking one way (ahead), when perhaps I should have been looking another (at the present). It hurt for a little while and my ego was seriously bruised, but I survived (not all of me, I hope). In the end, I was a better man for the experience.
On the other hand, there is one future event that should never blind-side a Christ-follower. It is the day of the Lord. It has been predicted. It is coming. No one knows the day or the hour, but it is absolutely going to occur at a definite point in time in everyone's future, and those who know Christ will know it is soon.
Be ready. Be ready. Please, be ready.
