Right All The Time

He speaks about these things in all his letters, in which there are some matters that are hard to understand. The untaught and unstable twist them to their own destruction, as they also do with the rest of the Scriptures. - 2 Peter 3:16

"I may be wrong, but I'm never in doubt."

I first heard this expression over 40 years ago from a full-time evangelist. I have even occasionally used it "jokingly" in the context of expressing my own opinion. It has been my personal experience that if a person states his opinion or position with confidence, then that position will often go unchallenged. This is not advocacy, just an observation. Even if you are wrong, when you state your position confidently, those who have no strong opinion may be swayed to your way of thinking.

Another observation I have made is that when trying to make a point, a person will sometimes just "pump up the volume." It's as if getting louder makes a point more valid. Of course, many will back down in an argument if you just yell. Perhaps this is why civil discourse seems to be dying in our country. The problem with both of these approaches in that neither confidence nor bluster validate one's position. Only truth, objective and absolute by nature, can do that.

God's Word is truth. He is never wrong; therefore, if you want to be right all the time, then stand on it and it alone.

It is twice as hard to crush a half-truth as a whole lie. - Austin O'Malley
