Under the Son

I hated all my work at which I labored under the sun because I must leave it to the man who comes after me. – Ecclesiastes 2:18

We have all heard that there are no U-Hauls behind hearses. Although, I have a friend who said he saw one once! The point, of course, being that you can't take it (your worldly possessions) with you when you die.

Solomon, with all his earthly riches and accumulated wisdom, came to realize this timeless truth and mused at the futility of giving your life to your labor and to the accumulation of possessions. There is truly no meaning to a life that lacks an eternal purpose, and while other religions may promise life in the hereafter, none grant the abundant life that Jesus promised and guaranteed. Whatever we give our lives to in this world, it should transcend this world, or it will ultimately perish.

Everything under the sun must be placed "under the Son." This is the abiding and everlasting principle of biblical stewardship.

The world asks, "What does a man own?" Christ asks, "How does he use it?" – Andrew Murray
