Don't Lose It

Watch yourselves so that you don't lose what we have worked for, but you may receive a full reward. - 2 John 8

Is it possible for a Christ-Follower to lose his salvation? If not, then why does it seem that John is warning the church about it? And if not their salvation, what are they in danger of losing?

John wrote these early believers to warn them about the loss of their reward. Each Christ-Follower is going to receive eternal rewards in accordance with their obedience to the commandments of Christ; particularly, it seems, the commandment to love. Even if it isn't possible for a Christ-Follower to lose their salvation, by disobedience they may lose part of their reward.

Jesus said that we should lay up treasure in heaven, and John reminds us to be sure that most of it remains there.

The highest reward for a person's toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it. - John Ruskin
