First, Wisdom

Yahweh made me at the beginning of His creation, before His works of long ago. I was formed before ancient times, from the beginning, before the earth began. - Proverbs 8:22-23

What did God create first?

Genesis 1:1 says that He created the heavens and the earth, but were they really "first?" Apparently not, for even before the angels were created, before anything else that God would make, He made wisdom.

God began with wisdom because:

• in wisdom, the foundations of the earth were laid in the cosmos

• in wisdom, the stars were hung in the universe

• in wisdom, all the animals, birds, and plants filled the earth

• in wisdom, man was formed from the earth's elements and given dominion over all that God had made and,

• in wisdom and by His grace, God would go on to redeem all that He had made.

It all began with His Wisdom; so, why would we ever think we might live apart from it?

Now all the knowledge and wisdom that is in creatures, whether angels or men, is nothing else but a participation of that one eternal, immutable and increased wisdom of God. - Ralph Cudworth
