Lay It Down

This is how we have come to know love: He laid down His life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers. - 1 John 3:16

Isn't it time that you laid down your life?

John said that we have come to know true love, because Jesus laid down His life for us. In light of this truth, isn't it time we laid ours down for someone else? We don't really have to physically die to do it, you know? We have to be willing to die, but we can lay down our lives without experiencing physical death.

How?

We must place all our ambitions, hopes, dreams, careers, families, friends, relationships, possessions, everything that makes up our lives, we must place it all at the feet of Jesus. It will not be easy. In fact, it might even be harder than dying itself, because we only have to do that once (unless a person happens to be Lazarus) but, true love requires that we lay down our lives over and over again for the object of our affection.

Yet, in the full knowledge and understanding of His love for us, can we really do anything less?

A dislike of death is no proof of the want of religion. The instincts of nature shrink from it, for no creature can like its own dissolution. But though death is not desired, the result of it may be, for dying to the Christian is the way to life eternal. - William Jay
