What Do We Worship?

Come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before Yahweh our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, the sheep under His care. - Psalm 95:6-7

Who do you follow?

The World Cup will be held all over the United States in 2026 and it will certainly draw the interest of many fans around the world. The one which I remember most occurred in 2010 and since we were living in Africa at the time, it was crazy! However, every team I backed in that Cup lost. Sometimes I wonder if I should change my strategy and cheer on the teams I want to lose!

I also like to follow my favorite teams in professional and collegiate baseball and American football. I even try to follow my favorite players in golf. Yet to be clear, I follow them, but I do not worship them! Some of the behavior I observe among those who attend these events sure seems approach idolatry.

Who or what is the object of your worship? To what or to whom do you "bow down" by giving the best of your time and resources, your life? God is our Maker. He is our Lord and there should be no other. Why would we give our lives to anyone or anything else?

The eyes of some of the fans at Davis Cup matches scare me. There's no light in them. Fixed emotions. Blind worship. Horror. It makes me think of what happened to us long ago. - Boris Becker
