Oh, That We Might Be Holy

In the same way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them committed sexual immorality and practiced perversions, just as they did, and serve as an example by undergoing the punishment by eternal fire. - Jude 7

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, God hates sin.

Is God love? Yes. Is He also full of mercy? Absolutely, but He is first of all holy, just, pure, and righteous, and because of these attributes, by definition, sin is offensive to Him, very offensive. It stands to reason then that if sin is offensive to a holy God, then it should also be offensive to those who claim to be His children by faith in Christ Jesus, His Son.

Peter quoted God, saying, "Be holy, for I am holy." Another word for believers (Christ-followers) in the Bible is "saints," which means "holy ones." Perfection is unachievable this side of heaven, but oh that we would only learn to hate our sin as much as God does.

Oh, that we might be holy!

The world has yet to see what God will do with a man who is fully and wholly consecrated to the Holy Spirit. - Henry Varley
