Our Head

For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands. Now His commands are not a burden.... - 1 John 5:3

Living overseas, I was always amazed by what many of the locals could carry on their head. Fifty pounds of rice? No problem. A ten foot long 2 X 10 board? Piece of cake. I don't know when mankind first began to utilize this method of portage, and yes, it allows your hands to be free to drive a motorcycle, but it seems that nothing is too heavy or burdensome as long as a person can somehow carry it on their head.

Most people do not like rules, boundaries, or commands. They feel weighed down by them, and the religious laws of the first century (and today) are just that, burdens. Yet, John said that God's commands are not burdensome (heavy or severe). In fact, God's commands do not weigh us down at all, they set us free. Do you know why?

Christ is the Head of His Body, which is the Church, and the weight or burden of all His Father's commandments have already been placed on Him! Think about it, the believer's Head is Christ and He has already borne our burden. Nothing is too heavy for us, if we just let Him carry it!

The burden of life is from ourselves, its lightness from the grace of Christ and the love of God. - William Bernard Ullathorne
