Promises, Promises

It is a trap for anyone to dedicate something rashly and later to reconsider his vows. - Proverbs 20:25

Have you ever promised God anything in this life? Have you ever made a vow? Have you kept it?

God takes vows very seriously. Do you know why? He takes them seriously because throughout history God, Himself, has made a lot of promises and if He had not kept His word, then we would not be able to trust Him, and if we could not trust Him, then we certainly could not believe Him or worship Him. As Christ-followers, we must be people who keep our word because we represent a God who will always keep His.

If we are always breaking our promises to God, why should He believe us? Be sure to think long and hard about a vow before you make it, and once you do make it, keep it no matter the personal cost, even those vows (or promises) we make to others. The ability of others to believe our God may depend (at least a little) on their ability to believe us.

We must not promise what we ought not, lest we be called on to perform what we cannot. - Abraham Lincoln
