The Blessing of Following

How blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in His ways. When you shall eat of the fruit of your hands, you will be happy and it will be well with you. - Psalm 128:1-2

The blessings of God are abundant and, if pondered in number and complexity, sometimes overwhelming. Yet shouldn't we take time to count and number them anyway?

As the psalmist reminds us above, we are going to be blessed (generally) if we fear (worship, revere) God and follow Him in obedience. We also comprehend, however, that our ability to obey is only made possible by Christ's sacrificial death, bodily resurrection, victorious ascension, and the indwelling Holy Spirit. This truth makes me wonder if we shouldn't stop more often just to thank the Lord for the blessing of following.

Our God-enabled obedience brings fruitfulness, happiness, fulfillment, and wellness to our souls, but too often we take such blessings for granted and our disobedience leads us to forget their source. Counting and considering our blessings, especially the blessing of following, may be all we need to restore an all too elusive peace.

If today you follow Jesus, thank Him for that blessing.

To love God is the greatest of virtues; to be loved by God is the greatest of blessings. - Unknown
