The Real "Rub"

When it is in your power, don't withhold good from the one to whom it is due. Don't say to your neighbor, "Go away! Come back later. I'll give it tomorrow" -- when it is there with you. - Proverbs 3:27-28

When my wife and I lived in Africa we would often have people show up at our home asking for money. Public begging is common in that part of Africa, and I didn't begrudge true needs, but sometimes I would send them away with nothing (particularly if I had previously given them something and prayed for their need). I thought that they should be able to find some work (somewhere) if they were healthy enough to be employed (unemployment is a virtual unknown in Africa, if you are physically able).

Of course, this isn't just an African problem. We often face those in need even in our own backyard. I still struggle with feelings of guilt, and wonder if am I wrong to send away or ignore those in need? Perhaps, but my feelings highlight the tension many of us experience. Who truly needs our help and who doesn't? Who is a scam artist and who isn't? Is it easier to give my money, than to give my time or my life?

Ah, perhaps that is the real "rub."

If begging should unfortunately be thy lot, knock at the large gates only. - Arabian Proverb
